My husband is currently my pastor. He has shepherded our congregation while we are in a time of transition as we await a new pastor. His current sermon series is on the Parables. His commitment to expository preaching, the text, and its hearers is incredible to me. This past Sunday he continued the series as he laid bare a message on the Good Samaritan. The church has always been taught this lesson by Jesus in a way that stirs us to DO MORE for our neighbor- to love them when it’s hard, to put a few dollars in the hand of a homeless person, be kind to someone in need. Brian’s perspective, however, was met with the Holy Spirit’s anointing on him like I’ve never seen before. It prompted me to write this poem about how motherhood is like the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In all our mothering we may try with all our strength to meet the needs of our neighbors, our children. However, we have a better Samaritan who meets every need perfectly and without resources ever running dry. AND what better way to celebrate one week with our son, than to write about him?
I heard your cries
As they carried with them your need
From your slumbering chambers
To where I sat.
At the first whimper I moved quickly
Ready to draw you close to my chest
To bring you comfort
And wipe your great big tears.
I do not know what these cries
Called out for,
All I know is that I want to calm them
To quiet you with my nighttime lullabies.
Oh sweet son of mine,
Soon you will know
I can not come quicker than He can,
I do not know your needs before He does,
I may not know the moment you will fall,
I only know I am here to be your mother,
To point you to the One
Who can.
Who does.
Who knows.
The Greater Samaritan.
